On Sunday, August 3, 35 members of the San Francisco World Mission Society Church of God gathered at Verdese Carter Park in Oakland, CA, for a volunteer event with a clear purpose–to shine God’s glory and bring hope to the East Oakland community.

The park and surrounding streets had long been neglected and filled with trash. Although renovations on the park are scheduled to begin in 2026, the park was in need of urgent care. With a heart to beautify Oakland, church members dedicated their time to cleaning up the neighborhood. In partnership with the City of Oakland Public Works Department, volunteers were equipped with tools, gloves, and trash bags to carry out the work effectively.

Though the work was not easy, by working together with a joyful mind, the Church of God volunteers were able to accomplish their goal. With their united effort, they collected an impressive 160 pounds of trash, which made a noticeable difference.

The impact of the event was felt immediately. Neighbors stopped to cheer on volunteers, expressing gratitude with comments such as “Thank you for cleaning up Oakland” and “I want to clean up Oakland with you.” Many community members showed interest in future volunteer services and were invited to join upcoming church activities. Being moved by the kindness of the volunteers, they were overcome with gratitude and awe.

Studies have shown that when parks are kept clean and maintained, not only do they help to reduce crime, but they encourage community engagement and inspire neighbors to take part in maintaining their communities with pride. Though a small act, a simple park cleanup can have positive reverberations throughout the community beyond its initial effort.

This effort not only benefited the residents of Oakland by creating cleaner and safer spaces for families and friends to gather, but also reflected the church’s mission of sharing God’s love. By addressing what mattered most to the local community, which was maintaining their parks and streets, members showed that the best way to love is to first understand. Having the understanding that community can be built through shared spaces, the volunteers wanted to ensure this community could thrive in an environment that was cared for and reflected love.

The Church of God regularly seeks to help and improve any community in which it is blessed to reside. Not only with street cleanups, but with initiatives such as food packaging and donations, blood drives, and community concerts.

Through this event, the Church of God demonstrated the power of service, shining light and hope in East Oakland while building stronger connections with the community.
