Torrance, CA, July 27, 2025 – An early rise, hot sun and hard work could not stop the ASEZ WAO members of the Church of God from serving with vibrant energy. Giving up their free time, dedicated to being the salt and light of the earth, they gathered at Columbia Park Community Gardens in Torrance to give the plots new life.
The group was composed of members of the Church of God’s ASEZ WAO, young adult members who work and spend their days off doing various volunteer services. They came from Torrance, Cerritos, Temecula, and Orange County church locations, united with joy.
Timely help of ASEZ WAO
Members focused their efforts on Torrance’s only community garden, as the plots at Columbia Park offer residents a unique chance to grow their own fresh produce. Due to a staff shortage, several sections had fallen into neglect, allowing weeds to spread and undermine both the beauty and productivity of the space, even threatening the neighboring plots. Volunteers worked diligently to remove invasive growth, transforming the area into a place once again ready to serve the community!

The cooperative effort came about after members reached out to local leaders asking what specific areas needed help. Torrance Council member Asam Sheikh, who presented an award, shared encouraging and thankful words. Recalling the group’s ready enthusiasm to assist in the project, he stated, “I was stunned, surprised and grateful. They’re really on a mission to help the community.”
ASEZ WAO’s Collective Care
Local member Brittany Johnson, who juggles a full-time job and frequent overtime, emphasized the importance of collective care. “I’m doing this for the members in the community who might not be able to find time to help,” she said. “If the environment does not look good, it can be devalued and abandoned.”
The Church of God’s mindset of serving is drawn from faith in the Spirit and the Bride, God the Father and God the Mother, who have served mankind with sacrificial love. Church member Maria Galeas cheerfully stated, “I do this because of what Father and Mother have done for me.”
Thinking of the servant’s heart of Christ who came to save all people, the Church of God will continue to strive and emulate the same spirit.
