City of Industry, CA (June 19, 2025) – As students across the country began their long-awaited summer vacation, high school students from ASEZ STAR, a student volunteer group of the World Mission Society Church of God, spent their time volunteering to address food insecurity in Los Angeles. The students, approximately 40 in total, were from the Church of God branches in Los Angeles, Cerritos, Orange County and Torrance.

ASEZ STAR Volunteers Assemble Over a Thousand Food Packages

Having a mind of unity, the student volunteers came together at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in the City of Industry to assemble food packages to be distributed to seniors and children across Los Angeles County. The food packages included canned vegetables, fruit juices, and other non-perishable foods.

The volunteer event was a part of the students 2025 Summer Camp with Friends. On a broader scale, this event aimed at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #2 for Zero Hunger, and also was part of the Good Neighbor Project initiative that is carried out by ASEZ STAR students all over the world.

The Church of God believes students have the ability to shape the future and through such activities, a better future can be forged. Participating in volunteer events also helps students to improve their character and understand the various situations within their neighborhood. Rather, than spending their summer vacation aimlessly, these students shined the glory of God by becoming the “salt and the light” of the world (Matthew 5:13-14).

A Job Well Done

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank operates under the vision, “no one goes hungry in Los Angeles County.” It regularly receives food donations and hosts various activities for volunteers to help assemble and distribute food monthly. Without volunteer support, it would be hard for the food bank to process donations and distribute them on time.

One of the volunteer coordinators of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Ruth Aul, stated during the closing meeting, “You guys did a great job! Thank you so much for coming out and supporting the food bank, even during your summer vacation.” Another food bank employee said, “Many high school students that come to volunteer here are usually distracted and not very engaged, but these students were very focused and worked really hard.”

At the end of the event, the food bank staff presented ASEZ STAR with a certificate of appreciation for their dedication, and announced that ASEZ STAR had successfully prepared 1,779 packages.

Ongoing Mission

The ASEZ STAR students plan to continue their partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank by participating in the food packaging and distribution process on an annual basis.
