On May 16, 2024, the City of San Jose hosted its annual Volunteers Recognition Event at the scenic Lake Cunningham Park. This year, the spotlight was on the ASEZ WAO international young adult volunteer group of the Church of God in San Francisco which received two prestigious awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the community.

The event, organized by the San Jose Department of Parks and Recreation, was a celebration of the hard work and dedication of volunteers who have significantly impacted the city’s environmental and community well-being. ASEZ WAO, a dynamic group known for its enthusiastic young volunteers, was honored with the Most Outstanding Volunteer Award. This accolade reflects their relentless efforts in partnering with the Beautify SJ initiative, a city program aimed at cleaning and revitalizing parks across San Jose.

In addition to the departmental award, ASEZ WAO received a special commendation from the city itself. San Jose Mayor, Matt Mahan; Vice Mayor, Kamei Rosemary; and all nine city council members, including District 8 Councilman, Domingo Candelas who presented the award, signed this commendation. The award highlighted the group’s remarkable contributions and unwavering commitment to improving the local environment and community spirit, particularly noting their significant impact on local parks and public spaces.

The council members expressed their gratitude for the group’s ongoing projects, which have brought about visible and lasting improvements in the city’s environment.

“I appreciate everything ASEZ WAO has done to beautify the city of San Jose through many volunteer initiatives,” said Councilman Candelas, “I look forward to working with them in the future.”

Adding to the event’s festive atmosphere, ASEZ WAO members showcased their musical talents by performing before the award ceremony began. They played piano, sang with guitar accompaniment, and held a choir performance, entertaining attendees and setting a celebratory tone for the evening.

“We love partnering with ASEZ WAO,” said a staff member from Beautify San Jose. “Every time we work with them, they go all out! They are a great volunteer group that anyone would be honored to work with.”

ASEZ WAO’s mission includes fostering improvements for mankind and the earth by engaging in environmental protection activities with fervor and positivity. Their initiatives are driven by a desire to care for their neighbors and communities, aiming to shine God’s glory through their actions.

ASEZ WAO’s volunteers have been instrumental in organizing numerous cleanup events, educational programs, and awareness campaigns. Their work has not only beautified the city, but has also inspired residents to take an active role in maintaining their surroundings.

The recognition event at Lake Cunningham Park was a testament to the power of volunteerism and community spirit. ASEZ WAO’s awards emphasize the significant impact that dedicated individuals can have when they come together with a common goal. The group’s passion and commitment continue to make San Jose a better place, one park at a time.
