On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the members of the World Mission Society Church of God in Torrance, CA were invited to City Hall to attend the biweekly city council meeting and receive a special recognition from Mayor George Chen.
The council meeting was streamed live online on the city’s official YouTube channel “Torrance Citicable,” and attended by over 100 people, including 20 of the Torrance church members. At the beginning of the meeting, the City Council recognized groups that provided a significant contribution to the city and its residents.
Mayor George Chen said, “The volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God have consistently stepped up to support our parks and community gardens.” He continued, “What stood out the most was not just the hard work they did, but how they did it. They brought cheerfulness, energy, and smiles. They complete tasks with a spirit of generosity that reflects their faith. On behalf of the City of Torrance, I want to thank the volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God for their commitment and selfless service in helping keep Torrance beautiful. We are truly grateful for all that you do.”

This recognition came after 10 years of partnership between the Church of God and the City of Torrance. During that time, the Church of God has conducted dozens of environmental cleanup campaigns and volunteer service events at several parks across the city.
Beginning with painting the fence surrounding Madrona Marsh back in 2015, and most recently renovating the community gardens at Columbia Park, the Church of God in Torrance, in collaboration with its neighboring churches such as Los Angeles, Orange County, Las Vegas, Riverside, and Cerritos, has racked up thousands of volunteer hours to support the City of Torrance and its residents. Volunteers are always greeted warmly by the community whenever they host an event.

After a brief address from the local Overseer, the members who were in attendance joined the city council for a group photo and their trademark “We love you!” cheer. The Church of God in Torrance will continue to demonstrate the love of Christ through its heartfelt volunteer services, not only within the City of Torrance, but all across the South Bay of Los Angeles, wherever a helping hand is needed to uplift the community
