LOS ANGELES (March 4, 2021) – In an effort to help Los Angeles residents who have been affected by the ongoing pandemic, members from five different branches of the World Mission Society Church of God in Los Angeles gathered together at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank facility in Commerce to package various food items. With support from Pomona City Councilman Robert Torres, and the office of U.S. Congresswoman Norma Torres, the volunteers were all eager to participate.
“It is going to take a collective community effort to get us through this pandemic. That’s why efforts like these are so important. Thanks to the World Mission Society Church of God for allowing me to be a part of this today,” said Councilman Robert Torres.
During the socially distant event—in which CDC guidelines were followed—40 volunteers, who represented congregations from Pomona, Culver City, Hollywood, Burbank, and West Covina, completed 2,709 food packages, which will be distributed to seniors throughout L.A. county. The food packages contained goods such as canned fruits, oats, beans and pasta, which the volunteers put together by forming two assembly lines.
“Our seniors have gone through so much during this pandemic, and we wanted to do something to help them. As the annual celebration of the Passover—a feast of life and love—is coming up soon, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to share that love with others,” said a representative from the church.
The Los Angeles Food Bank estimates that nearly 1 in 4 people in Los Angeles, including seniors, are experiencing food insecurity which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. “We are so proud of the work you all did here today. We look forward to the next time we can partner and work together with you,” said Los Angeles Regional Food Bank Director of Marketing and Communications, David May.
Members of the church are hoping to continue making an impact fighting hunger and hope to inspire others to do the same.
