SAN DIEGO (February 6, 2022) – In participation with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, members from the Church of God in San Diego gathered together to help collect and donate food to local residents in need due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition’s food insecurity report in 2019, over 450,000 people in San Diego County face food insecurity every day, which has only been made worse by the pandemic.
To spread awareness of this one-day event, church members invited friends, family and associates to come donate non-perishable items to be distributed through the food bank. As the local new station, KUSI, was also on hand providing live coverage of the event, many who saw the newscast at home also streamed into the food bank site to participate. By the end of the event, over 130 people had contributed to a total of 4,093 pounds of food being collected.
“The event was so amazing to be a part of because everyone worked together with beautiful unity and as a result, the event could be successful,” said one volunteer. One attendee, who stayed to help volunteer after being invited to come donate, commented, “It was a fun and very positive environment. Everyone was so nice.”
Ensuring the event would bring smiles to the faces of all who attended, the Church of God Cheer Team greeted guests with great enthusiasm and handed out Happy Postcards containing words of encouragement. For this united effort, the congresswoman from California’s 53rd district praised the good work of the volunteers through a video message and the CEO of the San Diego Food Bank expressed his thanks and appreciation.
